Personally, I love this film. I have actually chatted with a few fans that don't, and that surprises me. But to each their own. I thought it was very cool to see Nichelle Nichols as Uhura get some real screen time, and Walter Koenig as Chekov have a very different perspective on a familiar character. We also get to see that John Harriman isn't just a WTF choice as a starship captain. Alan Ruck does a great job giving the character more depth than the movie gave him by far. Tim Russ plays an excellent Tuvok as usual but with a very different twist. And the rest of the film is full of fine actors doing a great job with a cool story. Does it classify as 'fan service'? Personally, all Star Trek is fan service. This one is in fact, a fine version of what was best of the TNG, DS9 and Voyager TOS crossovers. I love the movie all around. Exciting and fun. -- Ken
